Day 1: Arrive Queenstown

Day 2: Queenstown
Today, choose one of the following activities:

Dart River Wilderness Jet
Taking you to the heart of a World Heritage Park, experience the most scenic Jet Boating in New Zealand. A 1hr 30min ride along the Dart River amongst towering mountains and the refreshingly beautiful wilderness of the Mt Aspiring National Park. Then take ashore for an easy walk of 20-40 minutes through ancient forests, unchanged for 80 million years. Hear an informative and entertaining commentary on the area and its history.

Routeburn Track Guided Day Hike
This full day walk in the ancient beech forest of the Mount Aspiring National Park starts with a scenic drive to the northern end of Lake Wakatipu and into the Routeburn Valley. The high snow capped mountains provide a magnificent backdrop for the walk up this beautiful river valley and pristine ennvironment.

Whitewater Rafting
Depending on your level of adventure today there are two choices:

Kawarau River: Ideal for first time white water rafting. This grade 2 - 3 river provides stunning scenery and includes the longest commercially rafted rapid, the 400m Dog Leg. Minimum age: 13 years, must be 88lbs or above.

Shotover River: Paddling in the rugged Skippers Canyon, it's not hard to see why the Shotover River (grade 3-5) is the most popular white water rafting in New Zealand. Minimum age: 13 years, must be 88lbs or above.

Day 3: Queenstown
Today, choose one of the following activities:

Boutique Wine Tour
Spend an afternoon among the boutique vineyards and spectacular scenery of Central Otago, a perfect introduction to the region. Enjoy tastings at 4 wineries, a delightful platter style lunch, and enjoy a stunning drive through the Kawarau Gorge.

Horse Trekking - The Ride of the Rings & 4WD
A wonderful day combining a beautiful 4WD tour and the excitement and splendour of riding through "The Lord of the Rings" country, a location for Peter Jackson's epic movie. Glenorchy and its surroundings are arguably the most stunning areas in New Zealand. This ride is suitable for beginners and is a walking paced ride. Min age: 5 years.  For the safety of the horses a 220lb weight limit to riders applies. More advanced rides are available, please ask at time of booking.

Ziplining
Fly on all six lines including the steepest tree to tree flying fox in the world! Perfect for those with an appetite for adrenaline - take your zip-lining to a hair-raising level. Zippers will fly down the hill for about a kilometre. This is a three-hour high-velocity 6-line adventure that includes a stunning 20-minute guided trek through ancient native Beech forest on our aerial tree-platforms. Experience the forest as never before. Ziptrek notes: Tour includes stair climbing and trail walking. Note: You will need to ride the Queenstown Gondola to get to the start of this trip. Gondola tickets are not included. Min age for Ziptrek is 6 years. Children under 15 must be accompanied by an Adult on tour. Min weight is 65lbs, max 275lbs.

Skppers Canyon 4WD Adventure
Skippers Canyon is a real 4WD adventure exploring the gold mining history in splendid New Zealand high country. Skippers Canyon Road was hacked by hand into the sheer cliff sides of the Shotover River Valley, following the discovery of gold in the Queenstown area in 1862. We follow Skippers Road, with every hairpin bend, across the historic suspension bridge, opened in 1901, to the old gold mining township of Skippers. This tour offers spectacular mountain scenery, rugged canyons, gold panning to gain a taste of NZ's pioneer gold mining history, and the excitement of the 4WD in a safe environment.

Day 4: Queenstown / Queenstown - Te Anau
This morning you may like to visit Mt Nicholas Farm and return in time to collect your rental car and drive approx 2 1/4 hrs to Te Anau.  Alternatively you may like to have a free morning in Queenstown, collect your rental car and then head for Te Anau for a tour to see Glow Worms.  

Today, choose one of the following activities:
 
Mt Nicholas Farm Experience
Enjoy a return cruise to Mt Nicholas High Country Farm on the western shores of the lake. Stop at Bob's Cove and view flora and fauna up close, and enjoy spectacular views towards Glenorchy, Mt Earnslaw, the Southern Alps and Remarkables mountain range. Join the farm guide on a walking tour of this authentic, working high country merino sheep farm. Watch the farm guide round up sheep & meet working farm animals used on the farm. Get off the beaten track to spectacular vantage points by 4WD vehicle before returning to Queenstown.
 
OR

Te Anau Glow Worm Caves
Cruise across beautiful Lake Te Anau to the western side of the lake to meet your guide. As you explore this mysterious underworld by path and small boat, your senses will be overwhelmed. You'll discover fossils and rock formations, and view rushing waterfalls and whirlpools. Learn how the caves are still being carved out by the incredible and relentless power of nature, before gliding through silent darkness to the glowworm grotto. The delicate incandescence of thousands of tiny glowworms is a magical sight.

Day 5: Milford Sound
Today you will enjoy a day trip to Milford Sound located approx 2 hrs drive from Te Anau. Transport to/from Milford is included on all of your trip choices today allowing you to sit back and enjoy the spectacular Milford Road. Today, choose one of the following activities:
 
Milford Encounter Nature Cruise & Kayak
Get up close and personal with this pristine environment on a small boat Nature Cruise. Reach out and touch sheer rock cliffs and drink pure glacial water straight from the waterfalls, see seals sunning themselves on the rocks, dolphins riding the bow wave or if you’re lucky, spot rare Fiordland crested penguins (in season). This trip includes a Milford Sound cruise, entry to the Milford Discovery Centre & Underwater Observatory and 1 hour of kayaking around sheltered Harrison Cove. Kayak through crystal clear waters in one of the most majestic places in the world. Suitable for all experience levels, no previous kayaking experience necessary. Double kayaks available which are perfect for families. Minimum child age is 4 years.  Operates 1 Oct - 30 April only.
 
OR

Kayak Milford Sound
The natural way to experience the essence. Join a small group for 4-5hrs on the water. Kayak an environment of waterfalls, glacial fiords and home to dolphins, fur seals, crested penguins and much more. Min age is 16 years. Must have medium level fitness.

Milford Sound Nature Cruise
Travel along the spectacular Milford Road by comfortable coach designed for viewing the stunning scenery. Grand, brooding, serene and wild, explore Milford Sound with nature guides aboard a cruise.

OR

Milford Walk & Cruise
Travel along the spectacular Milford Road with your local nature guide. Upon reaching Milford Sound, join a Nature Cruise for an extended cruise of Milford Sound to the Tasman Sea. The cruise provides excellent viewing opportunities and plenty of time to view waterfalls, rainforest, mountains and wildlife. On completion of the cruise, rejoin your small group and guide for an afternoon walk. Choose from a range of short walks (5-40 minutes in length) through the spectacular alpine area and Hollyford Valley or a longer 2 ½ hour unguided walk to Key Summit on the renowned Routeburn Track. Note: This tour only operates Oct -Apr.

Ata Whenua - Shadowland
This evening we highly recommend dining at 'Redcliff' in Te Anau and then seeing 'Ata Whenua' - Shadowland. This 32 minute movie brings you the Fiordland World Heritage Wilderness you would otherwise never see. Mysterious, evocative, exhilarating and utterly spectacular, filmed across extremes of season, climate and terrain, it will take you on an unforgettable journey through one of the most awe inspiring landscapes on earth. Filmed by a local helicopter pilot, this show is well worth your time. Tickets $10, a donation from each screening will go towards the endangered bird programmes in Fiordland. Day 6: Te Anau - Wanaka
This morning you may like to enjoy a hike on nearby Kepler Track or a half day fishing (additonal cost). Alternatively enjoy a late start before a leisurely drive to the lovely lakeside town of Wanaka, the gateway to Mt Aspiring National Park, one of New Zealand’s most beautiful areas! Along the way, you may like to visit the quaint and historic mining town of Arrowtown. Nearby is also the Kawarau Gorge and home to New Zealand’s first commercial bungy site. Here you can watch or try bungy jumping at its best!

Day 7: Wanaka
Today, choose one of the following activities:

Paddleboarding or Kayaking

Spend half a day on Lake Wanaka on a guided SUP or Kayak trip. No experience necessary. Must be able to swim.
 
OR

Lake Island & Nature Cruise
Traveling by boat, you will journey to Waho Island Nature Reserve, a unique glacial remnant of the last ice age and an historic site with ruins from the first settlers in Wanaka. The landing has facilities and active birdlife so you may choose to opt out of the walk and to stay here instead and relax or continue on the track. We'll climb steadily through native vegetation filled with very vocal birdlife to the secret at the top - a lake on top of the island with small islands in it. Carrying on a little further we come to the very top of the island and have a sweeping 360-degree view of Lake Wanaka, its surrounding World Heritage Southern Alps and valleys and the two lakes below. Half day tour.

Wanaka Hills 4WD Safari
Experience the rugged beauty and solitude of the spectacular high country, bordering a World Heritage Area with this exclusive 4WD journey exploring the private farm tracks on an historic Wanaka sheep, cattle and deer station. From the site of Nehenehe, an ancient Maori settlement abandoned in the 1830’s, to the ruins of one of Wanaka’s first European settler’s farmhouses (1880’s). This journey offers an unique insight into Wanaka’s rich history, heritage and modern-day farming life. *Half day tour, operates Sep - Apr.

Day 8: Wanaka - Franz Josef Glacier
This morning you may like to hire bikes for a few hours or enjoy a walk along the lake before leaving for Franz Josef Glacier. A very scenic drive over the Haast Pass into Westland National Park and along the rugged West Coast of New Zealand offers many magnificent photo opportunities, short bush and waterfall walks along the way.

Day 9: Franz Josef Glacier
Today, choose one of the following activities:
  
Glacier Heli Hike
A spectacular helicopter ride to a remote landing site on the ice is an exceptionally beautiful part of the glacier. Moderate fitness required. Minimum age 8 years.

Mountain Spectacular Scenic Heli Flight
Experience two of New Zealand’s finest national parks and encounter the gigantic expanse of both the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. Take in the towering ice formations and top it off with a snow landing: a chance to set foot on snow and breath the clean alpine air. Along the way, get to see the Tasman Glacier and get close to Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest peak. Features snow landing. Duration 40 mins

Day 10: Franz Josef Glacier - Greymouth - Christchurch
Today you will continue north to Greymouth where you will return your rental car, before boarding the Tranz Alpine Train which will take you from one side of the South Island to the other in just 4+ hours. Described as New Zealand's greatest rail journey and one of the worlds greatest! Departing Greymouth the TranzAlpine winds its way through lush beech forests, following rivers and skirting lakes before tracking slowly across the country's greatest mountain range, the Southern Alps. Finally crossing the huge, fertile patchwork farmlands of the Canterbury Plains and on to the city of Christchurch. Fitted with panoramic windows and an open air viewing carriage, passengers can view the spectacular scenery. There are also 16 tunnels and 5 viaducts, the highest being the staircase standing at 200+ feet. Transfer included from Railway Station to hotel.

Day 11: Christchurch / Depart New Zealand
Spend the morning in Christchurch before departing for the airport this afternoon and your flight back to the USA. Transfer included.  Alternatively, add our 3 night North Island extension.

Day 11: Christchurch - Rotorua
Fly from Christchurch to Rotorua. Upon arrival you will collect your rental car and drive 20 minutes to Rotorua.

Day 12:  Rotorua
Today you have a day pass to visit Te Puia followed by an evening cultural performance including a traditionally cooked dinner.  Te Puia is New Zealand’s living Maori cultural centre, located just 5 minutes from central Rotorua. Situated in the Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley, Te Puia’s 60 hectare site is home to the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, a live kiwi enclosure, the world-famous Pohutu Geyser, and more than 500 natural geothermal wonders. With land steeped in ancestral history, and a guiding legacy that stretches back to the 1800s, Te Puia extend their unique hospitality and rich Maori cultural heritage to all visitors.

Day 13:  Rotorua - Hobbiton - Auckland
Today you will drive to Hobbiton for a private tour. Your tour of Hobbiton starts with a drive through a picturesque 1,250 acre working sheep farm (there are 13,000 sheep and 300 beef cattle on the property) with spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges. Your tour guide will escort you through the ten acre site recounting fascinating details on how the Hobbiton movie set was created. After your tour of the film set your host will then take you to The Shires Rest with time to bottle feed the pet lambs and visit The Shire Store. Duration approx 2hrs. 
Afterwards you will drive to Auckland.

Day 14: Auckland / Depart New Zealand
Spend the day in Auckland before returning your rental car to Auckland International Airport for your flight home. You may like to sail on a America's Cup Boat, visit the Auckland Museum, visit SkyTower for stunning views of Auckland or enjoy a city sights tour.
